Statistics & Methodology

Statistics is an extremely vibrant field. It has developed tremendously in recent years: established methods have been scrutinised and refined and new ones have gained ground. We consolidate and coordinate the expertise of statisticians working in academic clinical research in Switzerland by identifying their needs and initiating projects to get the most out of clinical research data.

Translating between medicine and mathematics

What we offer:

With our consolidated and coordinated expertise, we help projects to develop statistical software that can be made available as an open-access resource for the entire statistical community. In line with recent trends and new requirements, we also foster data sharing between clinical research projects.

What challenges we tackle:

Interdisciplinary communication between statisticians and clinical research professionals is of great importance for statistical work, yet it can be very challenging. Since statistics is an evolving field, another challenge is keeping up with statistical research and recommendations.

Our key projects:

We develop guidelines, for example on sharing clinical research data, with particular reference to the national context and applicable laws. Each year, we run a competition for statisticians in the SCTO’s CTU Network. Read about grant winners from previous years and the first ready-to-use results from grant projects below. We also run a dedicated website for statisticians, where we compile guidelines, tutorials, courses, and additional statistics packages developed by the SCTO's CTU Network.

The minds behind the Statistics & Methodology Platform

We are statisticians working in academic clinical research in Switzerland who channel our efforts to provide statistical resources and to harmonise and standardise principles and processes.

Our tools and resources

Statistical programming grants that foster open-access statistical tools

Our annual statistical programming grants provide funding for the development of statistical codes or programmes. Applicants must demonstrate that their codes are geared at improving clinical research and bringing fresh solutions to persistent problems.

The grant is open to statisticians within the SCTO’s Network. Each winner is awarded CHF 12,000 to develop, test, and refine their code and make it publicly available.

Each winner is obliged to collaborate with another CTU within the SCTO Network to have the code cross-checked and tested by users. Ideally, these tools are published in open-access development repositories, such as the Comprehensive R Archive Network CRAN or GitHub.

The next call will be launched in mid-2024.
